Vascular Conditions

Peripheral Vascular Disease affects the arteries and veins of the circulatory system as well as the lymph vessels. It causes narrowing, blockages, and spasms of the blood vessels. This interferes with blood flow. It can lead to strokes, heart attacks, lymphedema, and gangrene.

Blocked blood flow to the legs can also cause pain, fatigue, and numbness. It can result in tissue death and amputation.

Smoking is the main risk factor. Other risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and sedentary lifestyle.

Treatments include:

  • Therapy for muscle weakness
  • Checking feet and toes regularly for sores and infections
  • Maintaining good foot hygiene
  • Wearing comfortable shoes
  • Compression stockings
  • Lifestyle changes including smoking cessation, diet changes, rest, and exercise
  • Medications as prescribed by your doctor
  • Surgery
