According to the American Diabetes Association, 25.9% of people 65 and up have diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. It is a very common condition seen in home health care. Early detection, teaching, and successful intervention can help prevent or deter later complications.
Diabetes affects how the body uses sugar or glucose. Elevated levels of sugar in the blood over time can be troublesome.
The most common symptoms include frequent urination, excessive thirst and increased appetite. Other manifestations such as irritability, blurry vision, headaches, fatigue, itchy skin, slow healing wounds, and frequent infections may be evident.
Oral medications and/or insulin are sometimes prescribed to stabilize blood sugar levels. People living with diabetes often feel more confident after working with a nurse on monitoring and tracking blood sugar levels, appropriate nutrition, understanding symptoms of hypo and hyperglycemia, and learning the appropriate actions for proper maintenance.
